The Hiking Writer

. . . I happened upon a path that vanished into a wood on the edge of town.

No Otter Creek, but the Smokies instead

Too much wet weather and just bad timing has made a last minute hike at  Otter Creek park nearly impossible. But a last minute 4 day trip to the Smokies has emerged and I’m really psyched.

If you ever get the urge in January, you can get cheap rooms in Pigeon Forge at very nice hotels for less than 30 bucks a night, and you’re only 15 minutes from the park.

Laurel Falls is on our agenda, and I’m hoping for snow Friday at higher elevations. I’ll be sure to give you the trail rundown when I get back, and I will be taking LOTS of pictures.

Happy New Year.

Meet Tony Romo

the new Drew “Motherloving” Bledsoe.

He will never be accused of being clutch.

Happy Holidays

I hope you all have a safe and joyous holiday season.

Be good to each other.

Louisville’s Ron English = gone

Louisville defensive coordinator and former Michigan defensive coordinator Ron English will become the 5th African-American head coach in division 1 when it is announced Monday he has accepted the job at Eastern Michigan.

Former Michigan head coach and English’s boss Lloyd Carr is a consultant for E. M.U.

It makes good sense for English, it further hurts a program moving backward instead of forward. Kragthorpe’s tenure as head coach at Louisville I think is destined to be short.

Santa’s Email Hacked

Some silly holiday fun.

Sexy

You probably don’t want to play this at work. But it is my favorite Prince song.

Damn

Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride.

A wonderful documentary of Hunter S. Thompson’s life. I finally watched it this evening on Netflix online.

He was a monster, a lover, a man of great portents and a demigod. He stomped on the terra, and spoke the Word of truth. Louisville’s own and literary brute.

I miss him.

Winter Storm Warning

For the Louisville area tonight.

They’re calling for freezing rain this afternoon followed by 1-3 inches of snow overnight. It won’t last long, but should be pretty.

Great movie

Jeremiah Johnson

What more can you say? I really like this Sydney Pollack film and it has played a few times in the last 2 weeks on AMC. If you enjoy the great outdoors like I do, I highly recommend it.

Robert Redford plays Johnson, a would be mountain man of the Rockies that learns how to survive and then civilization betrays him.

It is so beautiful, and the film itself is very quiet, but story is excellent. Rent it if you haven’t seen it, I get caught up every time I’m surfing and it is on. Like Patton, or Lawrence of Arabia or Bridge on the River Kwai.

Louisville Basketball on cruise control

I’ve seen it before, and I don’t like it.

Louisville’s men’s basketball team beat Austin Peay by 19 this afternoon, but was down 5 with 13 minutes to go. Like a gifted 3 year old at the Derby, we had plenty left down the back stretch and won going away.

But this season is only 7 games old and I’m pissed.

We have the best collection of talent since the late 80s. I don’t think anyone can deny it. We have seniors and juniors out the wazoo, and upperclassmen are the key to good runs in the NCAA tournament in March.

We even have a little freshman karma with Samardo Samuels. I remember another impact freshman by the name of Pervis Ellison.

With all that, I see a team that is on cruise control against average talent early this year. We’ve had dominant performances against WAY over matched teams, but when challenged, we play without urgency and we’re playing without a decisive team leader. Last season, Scott Padgett would be all over your ass for sloppy or lazy play. This year, it seems that guys are way too easy going and there seems to be no hard assed leader on  the floor.

I don’t think we can win big without that type of guy on the floor. But I do think we can win it all, it just depends on who steps up to lead us to the promised land.
