The Hiking Writer

. . . I happened upon a path that vanished into a wood on the edge of town.

Bernheim Autumn 2008

I took a “sanity day” today and hiked some trails in Bernheim Forest just South of Louisville. It was about as pretty as an Autumn day in the Ohio Valley gets, sunny, breezy and in the mid 50s.

I hiked the Lake Nevin Loop, the Big Prairie Loop and Rock Run Loop in addition to driving all around the park. I even revisited a few trails from my childhood, which I hiked when I was about 8 years old. I’ve been coming to Berheim for 40 years now, and it never seems to get old. In fact, I don’t think it ever will.

I’m planning on hiking the Millenium Trail (16 miles) within the next few weeks too, so stay tuned, there is plenty of Fall color left to come in this dry season.

I hope you enjoy the 41 pictures from today in the album Bernheim Fall 2008.

Tipsaw Lake Loop

This is a great beginner’s 6 mile trail in Hoosier National Forest.

I hope you enjoy the album Tipsaw Lake

This makes me sick

I’m speechless.

This election has exposed an underbelly I’d hoped didn’t exist, but it does. Both parties make up a nation of fools and idiots.

Why has this election brought out the ugly part of the American psyche?  McCain and Obama are close on a lot of issues, and both are upstanding citizens, yet both parties insist on slinging unsubstantiated mud. I understand why Colin Powell hates politics. You have to be willing to bathe in filth to participate in the process.

I don’t care who you vote for, I won’t be voting for either of the major parties yet again, but vote and make your voice heard. And please, please, please, ignore this hateful rhetoric from both sides. This is not an election to be proud of. This is not the way a civilized and PATRIOTIC society acts.

Going to my roots

My Dad was born and raised in Taylorsville, Kentucky. I have lots of cousins in the area too. I remember walking down to the Salt River with my Grandfather to see him fish when I was very little. Especially walking over the huge levee (a grassy mountain to a child) to get to the water.

Just after I graduated high school, they decided to dam the Salt River to create Taylorsville Lake, complete with a State Resort Park and 3 marinas. It’s taken over 20 years, but I finally drove all the way around the lake and visited all of the boat docks this past Sunday.

I hope you enjoy the album Taylorsville Lake

More Fall Colors

I took a short hike through Jefferson Memorial Forest this past weekend and took some photos. You know how it is, you walk, you snap some pictures, but nothing really excites you when you take them. Then, you get home and start looking through them a few days later and you think “Wow, I don’t remember that!”. That was sort of my experience this evening when looking through this set of images.

This is the often hiked blue trail to Mitchell Lake in the Horine Reservation section of Jefferson Forest. There are some good colors getting started on the maples and poplars, but there is still a lot of green left to change despite the drought we’ve been under for the last 2 months.

I hope you enjoy the Mitchell Lake Fall 08 album.

Hoosier Fall

I took the federal holiday today to drive to the southern Hoosier National Forest and check out the Two Lake Loop trail and a few others. Unlike Louisville, this section of the Forest has had some rain, so the Fall colors are really starting to pop.

I hope you enjoy the album Hoosier National Fall 08.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!!

Once and for all, it is not difficult.

The word is NUCLEAR.

It is pronounced: “Noo-Klee-Err”

If you pronounce it “Noo-Cyoo-Lar”, you are a f**king idiot.

Stop it.

(If you’re watching the VP debate, you’ll understand.)
